Acrylic on paper
In “Bylines” several small paintings are placed together on a larger sheet of paper. The paintings are based on newspaper clippings of “men in black suits”, as I call them, that I have been collecting over the years. Painted over images of Watergate are combined with images of the campaign of Berlusconi, the legs of Schröder, a sleeping member of Chinese parlament or a mass at Tahrir square. By painting over newspaper reproductions, I’m altering, blocking out and de-individualizing personae from the news. That way a new order arises; it is no longer clear who is a person of power and who is not. The viewer has to redefine images that seem very well known from the massmedia.
